Therapy FAQs

We’ve complied a list of some of the most frequently asked therapy questions. If you have any other questions not answered here place reach out.

Do you accept insurance for therapy? Which insurance plans are accepted?

Yes, many insurance plans offer mental health coverage. Our therapists are in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO, Blue Choice PPO, and Aetna PPO plans. We’re happy to provide a benefits check for you prior to beginning therapy to provide clarity on what your patient responsibility might be. If we are not in network with your insurance plan, we’ll provide a statement which can be submitted to your insurance plan for reimbursement.

Do I need to live in Illinois to be a patient?

Ida Lillie is based out of Chicago, therefore our therapists are currently only able to provide teletherapy to Illinois based clients. However, if you are located outside of Illinois and interested in services, please submit an inquiry. Requirements are often changing state-by-state, and we’re happy to look into specific information for your case.

Is therapy confidential?

Protecting your privacy is an ethical and legal responsibility we take incredibly seriously. As a patient, information you share about yourself will be kept confidential. There are a few exceptions, and these include if information is shared which indicates clear and imminent risk to you or someone else, concerns of child or elder abuse, or as required by court order. Additional details regarding the rights and limits of confidentiality are available in the Notice of Privacy Practices, which is available to you through the intake paperwork or through our website.

Can my therapist prescribe medication?

They cannot. Therapists are generally not able to provide medication evaluations or scripts, however we are happy to refer you for a consultation with a psychiatrist, and collaborate closely with your psychiatrist in your care.

Do you offer reduced or sliding scale rates?

Yes! Ida Lillie is committed to providing accessible services to our community. We offer a sliding scale services through our graduate intern program. This means that the cost of our services can be adjusted according to your financial situation. Please don’t hesitate to contact us for more information or to discuss your personal circumstances.

What happens in my first therapy session?

The first session, called an intake session, is all about determining your needs and if you and your therapist will be a good fit together. During this time they’ll learn about what brings you to therapy, current struggles and symptoms, past experiences, important relationships, and goals. Your therapist will then share more about their style and what working together could look like. You’ll then have the opportunity to share any questions, concerns, or preferences for moving forward with therapy.

When will I start feeling better after therapy?

This depends on what you bring to therapy (referring not only to your concerns, but also your openness). Some problems are able to be resolved within a few sessions, and others are more complex and will require more time and processing together. Throughout therapy we’ll check in about goals, how we’re moving towards them, and what aspects are helping to provide relief in an effort to move you forward faster.

Are therapy sessions in person or virtual?

All sessions are conducted virtually, as we’re an exclusively telehealth private practice. You’ll be able to meet with your therapist through a secure platform using a unique link for your video sessions.

What is the benefit of therapy?

The foundation of therapy is your relationship with your therapist. Through this relationship, you’ll learn more about how you show up in your relationships outside of therapy. Think of therapy as a place for you to role play for the real world, while receiving constructive feedback along the way.

Therapy is not advice giving, nor is it a place where you should experience shame or judgment.

Our Mission

Many of us from marginalized communities know what it’s like to have our voices ignored or dismissed.

At Ida Lillie, we acknowledge the history and reality of systematic oppression while offering our patients deep healing and change.
